Although Marggraf discovered sugar in beets and recrystallized it from beet juice, the operation was exploited by his student Achard, who succeed him in 1782 as Director. Achard withdrew from active directorship in 1800 to concentrate on developing the production of sugar from. The plaque tells us: "Franz Carl Achard. Founder of the beet sugar industry. Lived and worked in this building. Born Berlin 28 April 1753. Died Kunern 20 April 1821." Cunern was in Silesia; it is presently Konary, Wroclawskie, Poland.
